$225,000 Awarded for College Scholarships Courtesy of the Northern California Laborers’ Union

75 Students Awarded Scholarships for 2017

PLEASANTON, Calif. (Business Wire)—The Northern California District Council of Laborers (NCDCL) awarded $225,000 in college scholarships via the Northern California Laborers’ Scholarship Foundation. 2017 marks the 26th year for this foundation, and it has awarded 75 students scholarships this academic school year.

“The Laborers’ Union is grateful to provide opportunities to our members and their families via this scholarship foundation, because we want to reward their academic efforts,” says Oscar de la Torre, NCDCL Business Manager and LIUNA Vice President. “In many cases, these scholarships are the only financial aid these students will receive, and we simply want to help them achieve their goals. Surely, at $3000, these scholarships will help pay for higher education’s many expenses, like textbooks and tuition fees.”

In order to be eligible for the scholarship contest, applicants must submit an official transcript, write an essay, and provide letters of recommendation. All parts of the application including community service, school activities, GPA, and recommendations are considered during the selection of scholarship recipients.

This non-profit foundation’s sole purpose is to raise money for the dependent children of Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) members in Northern California to attend post-secondary institutions. Since its inception in 1992, the foundation has provided over 1,150 scholarships worth nearly $3.1 million.
